Biographies
Michel Beauchamp studied at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. He won first prize in guitar in Jean Vallières' class and completed a graduate diploma in writing. Mr. Beauchamp perfected his skills in Canada and Spain with great guitar masters Manuel Barrueco, Alvaro Pierri and David Russell. He has since pursued a career as a concert pianist, chamber musician, researcher, lecturer and jury member in Canada, the United States and Europe.
Mr. Beauchamp recorded his first album under the ATMA label with soprano Adrienne Savoie in 2001. The recording contains works by Mompou, Dowland, Schubert, Granados, Hahn, Ravel, de Falla and Rodrigo transcribed for voice and seven-string guitar by Michel Beauchamp.
He later became interested in flamenco, which he joined professionally in 2003. After more than ten years of performances with his troupe Pasión Flamenca, he created the Flamenco Guitar Workshop.
In 2004, he began a long period of research on three composers: Francisco Tárrega, Johann Sebastian Bach and Fernando Sor. On the centenary of Tárrega's death in 2009 and after five years of research, Tárrega: Complete compositions for guitar in score was published by Éditions d'OZ and a double CD by XXI-21-Universal. In 2011, he recorded JS Bach: Complete works for lute from to seven-string guitar at XXI-21-Universal and supervised an edition by d'OZ. Finally, Fernando Sor: Masterpieces for guitar was published by Éditions d'OZ in 2017 and closes this triptych of the greatest guitar works from before the 20th century.
Michel Beauchamp founded the Trio Iberia in 2014 with violinist Johanne Morin and cellist Julie Trudeau. This ensemble dedicated to Spanish classical music performs original transcriptions made by Michel Beauchamp. After being a finalist at the Prix Opus in 2015, the trio toured with the Conseil des arts de Montréal in 2017-18 for which it won the Audience Choice Award. The Trio Iberia recorded the CD Impressions d'Espagne . To purchase it, click here .
Michel Beauchamp's seven-string classical guitar is a 2016 creation by luthier René Wilhelmy . For flamenco, Mr. Beauchamp uses a 1966 Ramirez, made by workshop manager Pedro Contreras y Valbuena.
