About the event

Jaeyoung Chong is a highly skilled cellist and versatile musician with a passion for improvisation, composition, music production, and electroacoustic performance. Currently based in Montreal, QC, he is expanding his creative horizons and conducting research on cello improvisation and live electronic music techniques at McGill University, where he is pursuing a PhD in Music Performance under the supervision of Brian Manker.

He received his Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Ottawa in 2017 under the direction of Paul Marleyn and completed his Master of Music Performance with Desmond Hoebig in 2019.

With support from Music Industry Development (MID) and artsNB’s Emerging Artist Fund, Jaeyoung released his self-produced album, “Nostalgia,” in 2022. The album received critical acclaim and won “Recording of the Year” at the Music New Brunswick Award Show. Jaeyoung continues to excel as a solo recording artist and in-demand session cellist, collaborating with producers and composers across multiple genres. Jaeyoung’s improvisational skills have led him to perform with pop, folk, jazz, and avant-garde groups. He has notably showcased his multidisciplinary talents in free improvisation and audio production while creating his own visuals for the main series of Moncton’s new music festival, “RE:FLUX.”

Pianist Luke Bell was born in Belleville, Ontario. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Ottawa, where he studied with Stéphane Lemelin and David Jalbert, and a Master of Music and Graduate Diploma in Piano Performance from McGill University, where he studied with Ilya Poletaev. Luke is active in the contemporary and Canadian music scenes, and has performed throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Recent performances include various solo and chamber concerts in the Montreal area, the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Quinte Symphony, concerts in the United States with the Rosemont Trio (of which he is a founding member), concerts at the Westben Festival Arts Theatre, the Prince Edward County Festival, and the Music and Beyond Festival in Ottawa, a recital in New York with cellist Joshua Morris, and a solo recital at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. Luke has collaborated with several important Canadian and international artists, including oboist Vincent Boilard, clarinetist Sean Rice, violinist Amy Hillis, double bassist Ali Kian Yazdanfar, sopranos Elizabeth McDonald and Hélène Brunet. Luke has performed at summer music festivals in Canada, the United States and France, and has played in master classes with pianists such as Janina Fialkowska, André Laplante, Robert McDonald and Malcolm Bilson. Luke currently resides in Montreal where, in addition to his busy concert schedule, he pursues a second career in digital marketing.
